Lamont Awards and Apparel started as LaMont Wood Products in 1970.
We were local suppliers of all walnut related products to
the Award dealers in the Western New York area. It wasn't
very long until our demand far exceeded our output.
We decided that the profitability of selling completed awards,
as opposed to wholesale trophy bases and plaques, was better
for our future. We closed our wholesale business in 1972 and
incorporated as Lamont Awards and Apparel and Sporting Goods, Inc.
We moved to Spencerport, New York and took over an 800 square
foot location. We built all of our awards in-house and sold
printed T-shirts, jerseys, etc. to sports' teams. We found
it very difficult to depend on our garment printers to get
our orders to us on time...so we rented another 400 square
feet and set up our own silk screening operation.
My partner, Ray Lammes took control of the Printing and Sporting
Goods part of the business and I, Michael Montecalvo, took
control of the Trophy production. (The "La" of Lammes
and the "Mont" of Montecalvo is how we derived our
name "LaMont.")
From about 1975-1977 the business struggled. We had grown
too big too fast! Partner problems, employee problems, receivable
problems and inventory out of control...we were in a tremendous
mess! In an attempt to solve this mess, I bought out my partner
and tried to get "hold" of the business. We secured
a $50,000 loan from the Small Business Administration, sold
off the silk-screening part of the business in 1980 and sold
off the sporting goods part in 1982. By 1983, we were solvent
again.
Wow! Did I learn a lot about business in those years. We
probably made every mistake that was possible. It was only
through the willingness of our suppliers that we were able
to make it. They didn't panic when we couldn't pay. They set
up payment plans for us to catch up...and still continued
to sell to us. As it turned out, this not only benefited us
but also them. We still buy from these suppliers, we are now
one of their largest dealers.
In 1983, LaMont moved to an 1800 square foot location where
we produced only Awards. Our gross sales increased by $100,000
through 1990 when we moved to the 3600 square foot Plaza facility
that we occupy today. Early in 1999 we expanded to the other
side of the building to have a total of 6000 square feet of
space. With this extra space we formed a new business, Corporate
Specialty Products to take care of your imprintable product
needs.
November 1, 2000, Lamont Awards and Apparel and Sporting Goods, Inc.,
aka Lamont Awards and Apparel purchased all of the inventory and screen
printing equipment of a company, "closing its doors".
Two, six head embroidery machines were also secured. We hired
the sales force, as well as the heads of all its departments
to readily move forward in this venture. Our product line
will now include imprinted and embroidered apparel. As of
November 15th, 2000, we are d/b/a LAMONT AWARDS & APPAREL!
With the new growth we needed more room, we took on 2,000
more square feet of production space.
We believe that the recognition business is based on presentation.
We secured the services of an interior designer, Cheryl Boughter,
to design a facility that would support this belief. The location
we now occupy is, we believe, one of the largest, professionally
displayed Recognition Facilities in New York State.
